What will we learn?
- Marriages are composed of two people who sin. The book states that when two people “totting some surprisingly large luggage”—the Bible refers to it as sin—say “I do,” the result is a clash of desires.
- The problem is internal, not external. Harvey argues against the tendency to blame your spouse for problems and instead urges each person to take responsibility for the sin in their own heart.
- The gospel is the solution. The book’s foundation is that God uses marriage to reveal a person’s heart and to change their soul. The application of God’s grace transforms conflicts and weaknesses within the marriage.
- Mercy transforms conflict. Forgiveness is central to the gospel and should therefore be a defining characteristic of believers within their marriage. Mercy changes a person’s motivation from a desire to “win” to a desire to represent Christ.
- The focus is God’s glory. A thriving marriage is ultimately focused on glorifying God. The union is not just for the couple’s happiness, but also to portray Christ’s relationship with the church.
- Sin must be recognized for grace to be understood. The book emphasizes that a realistic and honest view of one’s own sin makes God’s grace shine all the brighter. When the bitterness of sin is confronted, the sweetness of marriage can be fully realized.
